Consistent sprinter Without Reg wins a race every prep and there’s every chance it could be a black-type breakthrough this campaign.
Without Reg came close with a placing behind Watch Me Rock in the LR Grandstand Cup (1400m) at Ascot back in March and there will be further opportunities following his photo-finish victory in the MCA Polytrack Hcp (1400m) at Ascot on Saturday.
The 7yo son of former Yarradale Stud sire War Chant (USA) was given a gem of a ride by Holly Watson tracking short-priced favourite Shmoov Moova (Territories) before holding on to defeat Angel Undercover (Harry Angel) by a nostril.
Yarradale-bred graduate Cashel Palace (Street Boss), who is out of a mare by War Chant, is also on track for a successful campaign after working home to finish third at her second run back from a spell.
Without Reg was bred by Yarradale's Bernie Hamill and was purchased from its consignment to the 2020 Perth Magic Millions for $29,000 by Oakford trainer Rhys Radford. That’s been paid back many times over with returns of $369,000 including Westspeed Bonuses of $55,000.
“He’s going as good as ever and his first-up run was enormous,” Radford declared. “They were probably a bit too good in the (LR) Carbine Club last time but he got the chocolates coming back to 78-plus grade this afternoon.
“He’s been going very well but as he’s getting older it’s taking a bit more time getting to his top. We’ve had a few tries stretching out to a mile but he’s won seven times at 1400m so we will stick to this trip.”
Suitable targets in the back half of summer include the LR Pinjarra Classic (1300m) on February 22 and LR Bunbury Stakes (1400m) on March 7. “I think he can pinch a Listed race,” Watson predicted. “He’s such as nice horse for the owners and we got it right today.”
Yarradale sire Gingerbread Man completed a weekend double for the Gidgegannup stud when his mare Run Pattie Run unleashed a whirlwind finish to win the MGIB Hcp (1200m) at Bunbury on Sunday.
It was her third win in five starts at the south-west circuit after being sidelines for twelve months with a serious leg injury. She’s come from the clouds in all three for Collie trainer Raquel Williams and owner-breeder Faye Ramsay.
Run Pattie Run is bred to get further as a half-sister to Paddy’s Shadow (Dane Shadow) who won consecutive LR Bunbury Cups (2200m) in 2021 and 2022. Their dam Pattie Me Lass (Lords A Leaping) won three times up to a mile at Belmont and she foaled another Gingerbread Man filly for Faye and Denis Ramsay in September.
