Veteran sprinter Oxbridge knows every blade of grass around Albany’s Percy Spencer Racecourse and he led at every call to improve his career-card to 14 wins from 62 starts there on Friday.
Oxbridge (9g City Place - Colleges by Elusive Quality) was initially handicapped to shoulder 67kg before a 4kg claim for apprentice Tiana Murray and she gave him a well-timed ride to score with something in hand from Flick The Switch (Sessions) and King Cartel (Universal Ruler).
Bred and sold for $45,000 at the 2018 Yarradale Stud Yearling Sale, he won an Albany maiden in April 2020 and has now banked $323,000 topped by a Listed victory in the 2025 Summer Scorcher (1000m) at Ascot on New Year’s Day.
Local trainer Stephen Sheehy bought him for just $10,000 as a 5yo and yesterday’s win was his 10th for owners Jamie and Kelly Belfield. “When I first took him on, he just kept on improving," Sheehy recalled. "He's a stable favourite and winning the Summer Scorcher was very exciting.
"I work him away from the track and I suppose it helps him maintain that form as a 9yo. His feet have also improved out of sight. My son is a farrier and that's helped a lot since he starting shoeing Oxbridge.”
Sheehy will set Oxbridge for the $400,000 Bluff Knoll (1099m) at Albany on March 8 where his rivals could include fellow Yarradale Stud-bred graduate Gift Of The Heart (Bradbury’s Luck).
Oxbridge was conceived in the second of four books covered by Storm Cat sire City Place (USA) at Yarradale between 2014 and 2017. His dam Colleges (Elusive Quality) has also foaled $340,000 earner Catch These Hands (Rommel) and Tourbillon Prince (Rommel) who has earned the equivalent of AUD1.43 million to date in Hong Kong. She foaled a Playing God colt in October.
Yarradale resident Shooting To Win was also in the frame in Hong Kong when Yiu Cheung Victory scored a narrow victory in the Queensferry Bridge Hcp (1650m) at Happy Valley on November 26. He was a six-time winner in Macau before crossing the Causeway to join trainer Dennis Yip.
