The first two year-olds by Yarradale Stud sire Musket are beginning to emerge around Australia and New Zealand.
Musket (Redoute’s Choice) is a three-quarter brother to Makybe Diva and won a Canterbury maiden on debut a month after turning three. He trained on to win at G2 level in the 2008 Shannon Stakes at Rosehill.
Perth based colt Black Musketeer was his first youngster to trial. Trainer Joe Miller produced him at Belmont on Monday to finish third in a 1000m hit-out. His dam Sateen (More Than Ready) is a half-sister to Melbourne stakes winner Gawne.
Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida is very happy with the progress of his Musket who has been named Danehill Native. “He wasn’t showing that much and I was a bit concerned,” Schweida said on Thursday. “But I added blinkers for a jump-out at Eagle Farm this morning and he looked a different horse.
“He ran second and, although it’s only early days, the improvement was very encouraging.”
Danehill Native (2g Musket - Native Music by Zoffany) was a $25,000 buy at the 2012 QTIS yearling sale on the Gold Coast and Schweida trains him for Mick Baker, Patrick Brady, Allan Meads and Robert Zammit.
Across the Tasman, Lyndhurst Farm studmaster Mark Treweek has entered a Musket colt for the NZ Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale on November 20. He has been catalogued as Lot 3 and is already turning heads at Cambridge.
“He’s almost black and being a real good-looker isn’t the only reason why he’s getting noticed,” Treweek explained. “He’s really impressing at the track and his breeze-up was extra good.”
Treweek is the leading consigner year after year at the Karaka 2YO Sale but he didn’t pin-hook the Musket colt who is from the Marauding mare Adaptable Lass. “One of our contacts in NSW recommended him,” Treweek said. “His older half-brother Magic Shaft won the Matamata Slipper earlier this year and I think this bloke is also capable of winning as a two year-old.”
Yarradale Stud is still taking booking to Musket. He stands for an $11,000 (inc gst) service fee and, for more information, broodmare owners should call (08) 9574 6490.
